2023 Jan, Alaskan Endurance Ride of 1967

This rare banner from 1968 depicts the epic Alaskan Endurance Ride that occurred in February of 1967. In that month, three men (with no support system of any kind) traveled 3,800 miles from the Trail-A-Sled, Inc. factory in Crosby, Minnesota to Anchorage, Alaska – solely upon Scorpion snowmobiles. Trail-A-Sled, Inc. provided the machines (stock 1967 model Scorpions) and bright-red company-branded snowmobile suits. Braving extreme conditions, including blizzards, Chinook winds and –70° windchills, the trio pressed onward while hundreds of well-wishers and dignitaries encouraged them along the way. In several instances the group was forced to travel several hundred miles, in a single day.

Finishing without a break-down was a shock to some, but the success of the ride did much to bolster the young firm’s reputation. The Alaskan adventure helped to put Minnesota’s Cuyuna Range on the map as a snowmobile powerhouse, and was widely covered by the international media. Completely unprecedented for its time, the adventure was a public relations coupe and became the cornerstone of the following year’s marketing campaign … “Scorpion, The Proven Snowmobile.” And the company’s unique patented rubber track was now, a proven winner. Sir Edmund Hillary (conqueror of Mount Everest) was so impressed that he chose Scorpion snowmobiles for his upcoming expedition to the Antarctic.

Pictured also is one of the three Scorpions, piloted by Duane Parks. Well worn, but still intact, 57 years later!

Air-sled Mural

Inside Crosby-Ironton High School you will find this fascinating mural depicting two locally-made Trail-A-Sled, Inc. air-sleds. This large mural was hand-painted in 2018 by Taylor Burley and was part of an on-going art project, under the tutelage of instructor Andrew Otterstad. The mural project featured elements of unique cultural and historical significance to the Crosby-Ironton area.

The manufacturer of these air-sleds (Trail-A-Sled, Inc.) operated in Crosby-Ironton for many years, before evolving into Scorpion Snowmobiles, a leading manufacturer of recreational products. The company closed its doors in 1981. The two air-sleds depicted in the mural are from 1959 and 1962 and represent the company’s groundbreaking four-seat, and two-seat air-sled models – forerunners of the modern snowmobile.

Feature Sled

Our 19th annual event will feature one of Scorpion's most popular models, the TK's of 1979-1981. A consummate Scorpion, the TK featured aggressive blaze-red styling, wide ski stance, exceptional handling and Crosby, Minnesota’s own Cuyuna engine. Truly the last of an era, the TK was the final production model both designed and manufactured in Crosby. For many, the TK best exemplifies the "Big Red" swagger exhibited by Scorpion's racing prowess during this exciting period. If you are a TK fan, you'll likely never see as many of these sleds together in one formation ... ever. So bring yours and be part of the action! In celebration of the “Big Red,” sport your best black and red attire!

2022 Feb, Scorpion Homecoming Frigid Success

Scorpion Homecoming a Frigid Success

Approximately 95 home-grown Scorpions were found on Serpent Lake this past Saturday, February 5th 2022 for the 18th Annual Cuyuna Lakes Ice Fishing Contest and Scorpion Homecoming. In addition to those attending the ice fishing contest, 200 Scorpion fans rode-in on their favorite machines for the two-hour meet-up. Several swappers were also on hand, to buy and sell parts for the ever-collectable Scorpion brand. The Scorpion Traveler award went to gentleman who came all the way from North Carolina, to attend the event. With an ambient high temperature of only 12 degrees, snow flurries, and a strong wind, it was one of the coldest Homecoming’s ever, with wind chills well into negative territory. Shout-out to all the Scorpion fans who came-out to brave the elements, and show-off their Scorpions.

Special thanks to the Sno-Serpents Snowmobile Club (Rob Geske and John Taylor) and the Antique Snowmobile Society, both of which went above and beyond, for the event. Also, big-time thanks to the Cuyuna Lakes Chamber of Commerce (Courtney Condon), Oars-N-Mine (Don Brown), Crosby-Ironton Courier (Joan Hasskamp), KKIN (Tom Martin), etc. Thank you! Important Ice Condition Update

Don’t be like these folks, who quickly became stuck on Serpent Lake just a few days ago! Although the Minnesota DNR has verified the lake’s ice thickness, automobile drivability on Serpent Lake remains extremely poor. Even well-equipped 4x4 trucks are not typically venturing-out on the lake. It’s the worst we’ve seen. The unusual combination of intermittent heavy snows and slush have made a real mess of things for vehicles. These same factors have made it nearly impossible to create any reasonably large area of on-lake plowed surface, for parking. As such, we strongly encourage participants to park along the numerous nearby city streets and ride their sleds into the event, or toboggin-in their fishing gear, as the case might be. See the 2022 webpage, for a map and further details http://www.trailasled.com/2022-feb-5-hc

Note, the Sno-Serpents Snowmobile Club will be assisting us in creating a nicely groomed area for the Scorpion display, so ride-in and set-up, beginning at 11:00 Saturday morning, February 5th. (Both ice fishing and Scorpion display starts at noon). Note, overall weather conditions look good, with a slight dusting Saturday morning and a high of 19F. Bundle-up and be prepared to be outside, most of the time. As always, attend the Scorpion meetup and the ice fishing event at your own risk.
