The building, two blocks south of Main Street in the center of the village, housed Trail-A-Sled, Inc., manufacturers of snowmobiles, along with the library and meeting rooms. Eight village vehicles, stored in a garage in the same building, burned, and complete losses are reported through-out the building. Firemen from Crosby, Ironton and Deerwood fought the fire throughout the night and were still at the scene today as the shell of the structure continued to smolder and flare up. Although finalized in November of 1966, the patented design was first used in production machines in the fall of 1964. The firm's single most important innovation, the continuous rubber track was initially used to propel the nimble all-fiberglass Scorpion for 1965. Titled ‘Bighorn Sheep by Snowmobile,’ the story featured California State Fish and Game Department experts along with Scorpion executives engaged in a time-critical mission to track and study the elusive desert bighorn sheep in the hostile Mojave Desert. Long before the availability of ATVs, Scorpions like the wide-track Mark III 400 featured here provided an otherwise impossible means of transportation within the barren sand slopes of “Devil’s Playground” and “Old Dad Mountain.” When supplemented by a Skat Trak wheel conversion kit, the Scorpion’s patented rubber track proved amazingly effective in navigating the soft sands of the Mojave. A special air cleaner and extra-heavy lubricants were all that remained to complete the conversion from snow machine to desert dynamo. Originally piloted by Duane Parks during the now-legendary Alaskan endurance run, this proud machine was later displayed in the lobby of the Trail-A-Sled plant in Crosby, Minnesota where it stood as as living testament to the brand's durability. One of only a handful of artifacts to be rescued from the tragic fire of November 1967, this historic machine was later sold at the Arctic Cat bankruptcy auction in 1982. Prior to this, Trail-A-Sled’s seats were manufactured at Paragon in Minneapolis. As production volume soared, Trail-A-Sled, Inc. elected to bring seat manufacturing in-house and hired a Paragon production manager to help with the process. Before moving elsewhere, that process began here in this building. In the many year’s since, this sturdy building has housed Northstar Motors, Prushek Plumbing and most recently Red Raven Bike Cafe. It was from here that Glen Gutzman constructed aluminum-based air sleds (having brought production from xya in Eagle Bend, MN) in the late 1950’s. Once joined with Dick and Stub Harrison in 1959, the small company incorporated as Trail-A-Sled, Inc. and began constructing fiberglass-based air sleds from this location. Although the garage was small, it afforded easy access to noisy test drives on Serpent Lake (much to the chagrin of the neighbors). Initially built to 70,000 square feet, the primary manufacturing building was expanded over the years and came to produce a number of additional products. Following the bankruptcy of Scorpion's parent firm (Arctic Cat) in 1981, the building has been occupied by Cuyuna Engine Company (engine production), UltraNautics Corporation (wet bikes and jet boats) and Minnesota Automation Corporation (pick-and-place packaging). It was here that an assembly line for manufacture of the company’s new, all-fiberglass sleds was set-up, as demand for snowmobiles began to take-off. Critical financing for this expansion was provided in part, by renown Duluth-based entrepreneur, Jeno Paulucci. Approximate years of use: 1963-1966. A commemorative sign may be found along the Portage Lake Trail (approximately 100 yards east of the Trail parking lot along Iverson Road). Use the parking lot adjacent to Iverson Road at GPS: 46.475259, -94.037870 then proceed to the east, along the trail to 46.475300, -94.036267 where a now overgrown segment of the former test strip runs north/south, perpendicular to the trail.
