SCORPION
HOMECOMING A SUCCESS DESPITE BRUTAL COLD
Crosby, Minn. – February 3, 2007
Bitter cold couldn’t prevent a large contingent of Scorpion fans
from once again descending upon Crosby’s Memorial Park for the now
annual Scorpion Homecoming, held as always in conjunction with the
Cuyuna Range Chamber of Commerce’s Ice Fishing Contest. Nearly two
hundred Scorpion exhibitors brought over one hundred snowmobiles to
brave the unusually harsh February conditions that descended upon
Serpent Lake this year.
Conditions were truly brutal, with temperatures bottoming at -18 and
wind chills as low as -45 yet Scorpion exhibitors were present from
throughout the upper Midwest and as far away as Alaska and eastern
Ontario. Several 1977 Bull Whips were on display along with an
amazing 1960 propeller driven air-sled. From the support tent
Shirley Hale reported brisk demand for Homecoming buttons and not
surprisingly given the temperatures, Scorpion hooded sweatshirts
were quickly sold-out.
The weather-abbreviated 3:00 PM awards presentation included the
following:
Chamber’s Choice:
First Place: Don Peterson, Deerwood Minnesota – Scorpion Moped
Runner-Up: Wade McCoy, Alexandria Minnesota – 1977 Whip
Peer’s Choice:
First Place: Marion Ziegler, Fountain City Wisconsin – 1975 Super
Stinger 440
Runner-Up: April Small, Durham Ontario – 1969 Mark I
People’s Choice:
First Place: Butch Holmvig, Aitkin Minnesota – 1971 Mark II
Runner-Up: April Small, Durham Ontario – 1969 Mark I
Special thanks goes out Bob Heath and Mark Filas of Range Car Wash (located just east of
Crosby on Highway 210 & 6) for assisting with traffic control as well as Tim
Leonard and Dwayne Jenson who both contributed a significant amount
of personal time to ensure this event was a success, in spite of the
weather. Princeton residents Tim Quast and family led a small
contingent of Scorpion collectors for an abbreviated trail ride on
Serpent Lake. Ralph LaPlant of
North Woods Images made sure the event was properly recorded on
film and Sentence to Serve provided valuable assistance with the
heated on-ice support tent – a true lifesaver. The open house
immediately following proved a popular stopping place for the
majority of the participants, with hot food and old Scorpion stories
available in abundance well into the evening.
By all accounts a reprise in 2008 appears likely. Check
www.trailasled.com for
periodic Homecoming updates.
An
excellent photo album of the event can be found at
Jim Solberg's site. Several photos from the Homecoming are also
available in the Recent Images
section of this site. Select from the thumbnails in the lower right.

the official Homecoming 2007 flyer (Adobe format).
Several exciting changes are expected for 2007, including the
addition of a feature sled category. This year's featured Scorpion
is the legendary cross-country racing machine from 1977, the Bull
Whip.
The agenda and tone of the event is expected to be similar to prior
years. For a recap of prior events, browse
Scorpion Homecoming 2005 or
Scorpion Homecoming 2006.
Scorpion Homecoming is a casual, free and fun display-only event. No
judging will be conducted. No formal provisions are being made for
swap or race activities. Attendees are however encouraged to support
the Chamber by purchasing a raffle ticket for $1.00 or $5.00
(excellent prizes awarded need not be present to win), patronizing
the concessionaires and purchasing a very special Scorpion
Homecoming commemorative button featuring the Bull Whip!
All
Scorpions, as well as Scorpion-manufactured brands are welcome,
including Trail-A-Sled, Sno-Ro, Sears, Sno-Craft, Brut and
Massey-Ferguson.
Machines need not run to be displayed. For safety reasons,
propeller-driven air-sleds will NOT be operated during the event.
Several awards will be presented, including Peer's Choice (voted by
fellow exhibitors), People's Choice (voted by the general public),
and Chamber's Choice (voted by the
Cuyuna Range
Chamber of Commerce).

PARKING & TRAFFIC FLOW
Traffic flow volunteers from Range Car Wash
will be directing traffic as exhibitors pass through the boat
landing area of Memorial Park. Given the recent cold spell, on-ice
parking should be readily available and easily accessible just
offshore from the boat landing. See traffic flow directors for
on-site details. As always, on-ice driving and
parking is at your own risk (nearby street parking is available).
DISPLAY AREA
A dedicated display area will be set-up adjacent to the ice fishing
area on Serpent Lake just offshore from Memorial Park. Although
welcome, no formal provisions are being made for swappers (and no
fees are accessed). All swappers in attendance are asked to set-up
around the perimeter of the display area and not within the
snowmobile display lines.
A dedicated line for Bull Whips will be set-up near the display area
entrance. Please place all Bull Whips (regardless of condition) in
this area.
All on-ice parking and activities are at your own risk. Ample city
street parking is available near the event.
The
display area is reserved specifically for Trail-A-Sled, Scorpion and
other brands directly manufactured by such. Other antique and
vintage brands are welcome (but are asked to please set-up around
the perimeter of the display area).
Local ride-in sleds are encouraged!
At the Homecoming support tent a sled sign and Peer's Choice ballot
will be provided to each Scorpion displayed. Within the support tent
you will also be able to purchase Scorpion Homecoming buttons and
related commemorative hats and mugs. All profits benefit the Chamber
of Commerce. Cash only please
