joel     valparaiso, in     2010-02-28 i have a 80'' whip 440, bought it with a hole in #1 piston. rebuilt it completely, but crank, new seals, pistons, rings clips, all the good stuff. it ran great for a couple days. plugs showed great mixture on #2 then lean on #1, with one carb this just isnt clicking for me. long story short i popped #1 again, same whole, same place. i think its the timing, gonna rip it apart tomorrow. does anyone have the stock jet sizes? and/ or any imput on this problem, sounds typical. (Cuyuna JLO 440, walbro carb)

NDK - 2359     Alberta     2010-01-17 Hello, I have a 1998 Powder Special 600 EFI that starts great when cold or when stopped for several minutes. If it sits longer than 4-5 minutes, when hot, it takes anywhere from 2-4 pulls to re-start. The dealer has no idea...tried changing fuel regulator...No change....any ideas??? Thank You. NDK

From early 1970''s till scorpions end, he had bought and rode every model. 1975 he rode his 440 whip over 3400 miles, that season and passed it down to me.In 1987 he sold his last sled,that was a cat. He started with a polaris little andy. In 1967, his freind and brother went to Yellowstone, and rode south gate to west gate. The park ranger said he never saw anyone riding little machines out there. He made that trip with a snowjet. After 24 yrs not having a snowmobile myself, My wife and I have bought 4 scorpions, my son 4 machines. We are into classic scorpion snowmobile. I really enjoy all the history in this site, Thank you.

Ric     NH     2009-12-12 I am restoring a 1975 Whip 400 with a rockwell, walbro pumper set up. I am in the reassembly stage had the carb rebuilt and am replacing all the fuel lines. I cant find where the walbro carb integrated pump hooks up to the crank in order to recieve the vacume pressure it needs. The pump is built in to the top of the carb and has a hose fitting. dors anyone know where the hose would run to in order to get the vacume needed to drive the pump I cant seem to find it anywhere on the engine, would appreciate any help thanks.

It has 891 miles and hasn''t been on the trails for since the 80''s. My dad was a Scorpion dealer in central MN for many years, and this was the last sled he had. It was kept under covers in his shed until his death a couple years ago. I brought the sled home with me, and my neighbor did all the work to clean it up to its current condition. Please contact me if interested and I''ll send pictures. This is a must-have for the collector seeking the perfect gem. One look and you''ll want this Whip. It''s great to see the memories and history of Scorpion live on. I had a blast growing up with these sleds, driving up to Crosby to pick up a truckload and have them sell as fast as we could set them up. He showed me that picture years ago and told me that Ken Dekat, Roger Ebert, and himself were test running the sled on round lake, near Nisswa, MN. The reason I believe that is him is in that picture is I recognize that Helmet. I still have it! I wish they would credit him as the guy in that photo.

tom peterson     star prairie, wi     2009-10-12 my dad dave peterson and good friend roger larson sold, serviced and raced scorpions in star prairie wi. we have restored many scorpions over the years. our old 634 stinger is in mr.harrison''s collection. After many years away from the sport, 69 years young roger larson has re-kindled the passion. he and i have bought back as many scorpions as we can find and Roger has started racing again! Roger raced and tuned many scorpions in the 70''s. this summer he raced our original 634 mod stinger w/megaphones in rhinelander wi, princeton mn and duluth mn. along with 5 other stock sleds! The 634 was modified in marshfield wi 39 yrs ago! Roger was very fast this summer with it! also, his original 72 440 was tough to beat. our 74 400 super stinger also had many wins. 10 year old erin peterson, grand daughter of dave also had wins on a lil'' whip. What a memorable summer! To see Roger and Dave back at the races was neat. If you see these two scorpion icons at a race, show or at crosby, make sure to say hi!

I have never seen this pic before. Art Davis was Scorpions top dealer for three years in a row, I still have the plaques. He is gone now but I will never forget how hard he worked late nights in the garage so our family and friends could ride the trails that we carved out, by hand, in the summer in Jay Cooke State Park. Adam     Breezy Point, Mn     2009-02-11 I have successfully restored a 1973 Stingerette completely from start to finish in about 3 and a half weeks and finishing February 6th- the day before this year''s homecoming. Long story short, this project and this snowmobile will live on as an landmark and milestone in the local and national music scenes. It is the first of hopefully many Scorpion restorations that will, in the long run, raise money for music education.

Duane Quam     Adams Wisconsin     2009-01-29 I was a partner in a Scorpion Dealership in 1967,68 and 69 in Lodi Wisconsin. In 1970 I went to work for Great Lakes Scorpion the distributor for Wisconsin, the UP and Northern Illinois. I was the Rep for Southern Wisconsin until the spring of 1974. In April of 1974 I moved to Hayward Wisconsin and became the Rep for Northern Wisconsin and the UP. Scorpion purchased most of the Independent Distributors in 1975 and was hired by Scorpion Inc. in 1975. In 1977 I was transfered to Barrie Ont. to head up Scorpion''s Eastern Canada operations. In late 1979 I returned to Crosby to take over as manager of the Parts Garmets and Accesories divison and was there until the end of Scorpion, in the spring of 1980. Of all the changes that Scorpion went through, the best was when Harvey Paulson took over. He was a true professional in every way and was the best thing that happened to not only Scorpion. but to the snowmobile industry in general. If anyone is looking for part numbers I have all the manuals from 1968 on and would be glad to help. Long live the memories of Scorpion and all they did to promote snowmobiling.

Wes Wolsey     Cardston Alberta Canada     2008-03-27 I own 3 Scorpion Snowmobiles. The first one was purchased back in 1969 by my oldest brother and my dad. I will never forget the anticipation our family had the day they went to town to pick it up from our local dealer, Beazer Fuel. It is a Mark III 300 and if I remember correctly, cost about $1100.00 new. The next machine is a 1970 stinger with the red metal flake hood that was bought used by another one of my brothers. He later sold it to me for $200.00. The third machine is a 1971 340 Super Stinger racing machine, red metal flake wedge hood design, with open vents to provide cooling for the CCW free air engine and tuned pipe. It was originally owned by a local racer and we bought it from him back in the early seventies for $300.00 All three of these machines run today. Each of my children have grown up riding these machines and my son and I continue to have a blast on them. Just last month we had a lot of snow here and school was called off. My son spent the afternoon on the 1970 Stinger crusing around the neighborhood giving his friends rides and getting the thumbs up from all kinds of people. Thanks for bringing back a little bit of history and great memories with this web site. And a special thanks to all the people involved in building the kind of quality snowmobiles that have lasted through three generations in our family. Thanks so much!

I do need some help in locating a windshield, the center console cover along with a headlight assembly and tail light assembly. The sled came with a bunch of extra parts as well. Mike     Monroe, Michigan     2008-02-17 I had a older sting I believe with the 440 Cuyuna blew the pistons, scored the walls had it professionally bored 40 over but wiseco pistons in it drove it 1 mile down the road and blew the right piston, fixed it same thing happened again was wondering if anybody knows why these motors blew the right side all the time. I heard if you change carb it stops but is this true.

Rick     Floodwood, MN     2007-12-21 FOR SALE. Both machines for $800. 1967 Sears Snowcruiser made by Scorpion & a 1968 Scorpion. The Sears Snowcruiser is in nice condition for its age. This is a rare machine made by Scorpion and sold by Sears. The JLO engine turns over with great compression and runs while spraying gas into carb. It will need new gas lines, fresh gas, etc.. The hood looks nice. The frame is solid. The track looks real good for its age. The seat is nice and soft. The windshield is brand new. The front chrome bumper has a slight bend. The 1968 Scorpion is in rough condition. The JLO engine does turn over. The frame is totally rusted out. The seat is fairly nice and still could be used. The hood does have a crack in it. The track could possibly be used yet. The front chrome bumper is nice. I can store these snowmobiles inside my building for you to pick up whenever as long as paid for in full. I do accept paypal. Bryan     Illinois     2007-12-10 Hi I just got an 80 Scorpion whip 440 that runs for about 15 -20 min. With low power then it dies. After the engine dies it will not restart for about an hour or more. When the unit dies I still have spark and it will pop over a few times but just wont start. I tried changing plugs and it did not help. I tried to lean it out and still is not any better. Also drained the fuel and made sure that I had a fresh 50:1 mix of fuel still not any better. When the unit is running it seems to run a little rich and it smokes a bit more then I think it should. When the engine dies out I also tried to remove the plugs and pull a few times incase it was flooded but after pulling and I put in the new plugs it is not any better. Also what is the best spark plug to use with this engine and is 1 1/4 turns out on the needle ok as a starting point for the carb. Any ideas would be a big help. Because today is the start of the season and we got snow.

The seller said that he had a gas tank for a 1980 whip that looked exactly like it. I found a picture of a 1980 whip and the gas tank cover looks the same as the one on my Sting. Will the gas tank for the whip fit my Sting?

Now I have no compression at the spark plug of the head near the clutch. The head gasket looks ok the piston moves up and down normal but is not creating any pressure. About 30 psi. The other cylinder is about 90. What should I do?

This past weekend I had the sled out and was running about 7000rpm 30 mph and the engine started spuging and jumping so I shut it off and pulled the plugs and every thing looked ok so i started it back up and it only would run on one cylinder so I towed it back home and I pulled the head and the piston again is starting to decay on the top in the middle so if you know why or how I can prevent this. When I found the sled it didn''t have a windshield or seat, I have since replaced the windshield and am in the process of having a seat upholstered. The only mechanical repair that I made to the snowmobile was put a new rewind on it. The sled now runs like brand new. I am interested in finding an original seat and red metal flake hood. I have it now and ride it my back yard (no ice on the bay)! Still looks and runs great although I did have to replace the piston last winter.

I couldn''t even take it up to max speed, as it scared me too much. I''ve since moved to the south, and for some reason thought of the Scorpion today - so I headed to Google to see what the latest is. It was sad for me to see the demise of Scorpion... but I enjoyed reviewing the site and reading the history and watching the videos. I wish I would have known about the reunion last year... I would have tried to make it up. Feel free to email me with any future reunion info, as I would like to try to attend one.
